Triumph Street 'Single' rumoured

Triumph believed to be working on a 350cc single in Brazil

ACCORDING to Sir Alan Cathcart, Triumph are rumoured to be developing a new product for the 'opposite end of the spectrum' - a 350cc single-cylinder bike aimed at beginners.

Called the Street Single, the image above comes from an artist's impressive of how the bike could appear, the lower-capacity machine will be powered by a liquid-cooled, four-valve, single-cylinder engine, with displacement ranging from 267 to 350cc depending on where it's sold. Triumph are believed to be presenting the Street Single next year.

The speculation on Motorcyclist Online, comes from news out from Brazil's Motociclismo magazine that new bike will be assembled at Triumph's new factory in Manaus, Brazil, and built from kits produced at one of Triumph's Thai locations.

The bike woold be a clear rival for the KTM-Bajaj KTM Duke 350 in targeted markets in South Asia and a naked alternative to the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Honda CBR250R if brought to Europe.

Triumph Street Single | Coming Soon

Triumph motorcycle production continues to reach new heights, with the company on-track to build 53,000 motorcycles this year in two British and three Thai factories. Much of this growth is the result of a headlong rush into new markets with bold products like the Tiger 800 adventure bike and Daytona 675 supersport. Triumph will continue to extend its range, which has grown from 13 models in 2007 to 20 models in 2011, with even more new models planned for the next two years. We’ve already spied the large-capacity Trophy tourer (Up To Speed, February), and it’s widely understood this motor will also power a new adventure-tourer to compete with BMW’s R1200GS. Now we’ve learned that Triumph is developing new product at the opposite end of the spectrum, in the form of a small-displacement, single-cylinder beginner’s bike.

News of this machine first broke in Brazilian magazine Motociclismo, which says the bike will be assembled at a new Triumph factory in Manaus, Brazil, from kits produced at one of Triumph’s Thai factories. The so-called Street Single will be presented in 2012 and will be powered by a liquid-cooled, four-valve, single-cylinder engine displacing 267 to 350cc, depending on where it’s sold. This will be a potent rival for the Indo-Austrian KTM 350 Duke in developing markets, and a distinctive and desirable alternative in America to the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Honda CBR250R—the latter, by no coincidence, also made in Thailand.

No, that isn’t a Street Triple. Look closely and you’ll see that’s a single-cylinder motor, likely 250cc in capacity. This is the new Triumph entry-level street bike.

Photos By: Chris Doane Automotive LLC

A basic, steel tube frame holds the liquid-cooled motor, connected to a basic, box-section swingarm. Up front, those bug-eye headlights — the same as the 2013 Triumph Street Triple — provide a familial connection that’s also provided in the large exhaust canister.

The rest is a much more generic, budget bike. A bulbous tank and plastic radiator shrouds lack any defined shape, as does the large seat unit. This will be a practical motorcycle — a one-piece seat creates adequate room for rider and passenger, while the latter also benefits from prominent grab rails.

Running gear is very basic. Thin, RWU forks hold a single brake disc and two-piston, sliding caliper. Tires appear to be the same IRC Road Winner bias ply items fitted to the Suzuki GW250, Honda CBR250R and Kawasaki Ninja 300. Those three bikes will be the Triumph’s main rival in the U.S. and in Europe, but it will also target developing markets in Southeast Asia and South America.

It’s likely that the majority of the bike’s parts will be manufactured in Triumph existing factory in Thailand, then assembled in its new facility located in Chennai, India. This arrangement helps avoid import tariffs in both countries, which are both massive motorcycle markets.

It’s been rumored that this bike could form a platform for multiple models, some as large as 350cc and form the lynchpin of Triumph’s efforts to it’s expand global sales volume to 250,000 units annually by 2016. The move will make it over twice the size of BMW, dwarfing Ducati and its current 44,000 annual unit volume. Both those companies are pursuing similar expansion in developing markets, just not as quickly as Triumph seems to be.

Stay tuned to RideApart for more on this story in the coming weeks and months.
